Exhibition ¾ de lo mismo. Fotolibros y dummies. A homage to Eloi Gimeno and the Dummies of the Fotobookfestival Kassel

The most international photography returns to the IED Madrid, guest venue for the 22nd edition of the international photography and visual arts festival PhotoESPAÑA. An event at which you will discover the latest international trends in the art of photography.

At the IED Madrid you will be able to visit two exhibitions related to the photobook medium, curated by Moritz Neumüller, independent curator and director of the photography department at the IED Madrid.

On the one hand, a homage to the legacy of the designer Eloi Gimeno showing over 30 photobooks, among which you will find Casa de campo (named after Madrid's largest woodland) by Antonio Xoubanova and Unmarked by Stephen Chalmers, both teachers at the IED Madrid’s school of photography, and Karma by Óscar Monzón.

The designer and photographer Eloi Gimeno (1983-2019) is considered to be one of the key figures in the field of contemporary Spanish photobooks. Hellsinki (2010) was his first photobook, self-edited and winner of two Laus awards. In 2014 he published his second book in graphic essay form: LIBRO [BOOK].

In addition, on Wednesday 5th June at 18:00 the IED Madrid will host a round table “Eloi Gimeno, visto desde el diseño” [Eloi Gimeno as seen from the perspective of design] with Moritz Neumuller (IED Madrid), Pablo Mariné (Koln Studio), Alberto Salvan (Tres Tipos Gráficos) and Gonzalo Golpe (La Troupe).

On the other hand, the 11th edition of the Kassel Photobook Dummy Award will provide an opportunity to see a selection of about 53 books of photography in their purest state - the unedited mock-up - produced by hand by their authors.

Since 2008 Fotobookfestival Kassel, a charitable foundation committed to the artistic medium of the photobook, has presented a programme of festivals of international prestige. A sample of works by renowned artists and the promotion of established and emerging talents: editors, designers, printers, curators and booksellers on an international platform.

The festival has two major awards for the best photobooks of the year, which will be awarded at the IED Madrid: Kassel Photobook Award and Kassel Dummy Award. For this year’s edition, 362 photobooks have been received from 37 countries around the world.

The panel’s final meeting to choose the 3 winners will take place on Thursday 6th June at the IED Madrid, in a session that is open to all IED students. The winning book will be produced and published by Mas Matbaacilik, the main printing and binding company for photobooks in Istanbul, in collaboration with the Fotobookfestival Kassel.

The panel will be made up of: Sonia Berger –Head of Dalpine Publishing–, Tamara Berghmans –Commissioner and researcher at Fotomuseum Antwerp–, Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche –Collector–, María García Yelo –Former Director of PHotoEspaña Madrid–, Moritz Neumüller –Commissioner and professor at IED Photography Madrid–, Ufuk Sahin –Editor at Mas Matbaa Istanbul– and Markus Schaden –Commissioner at The PhotoBook Museum Cologne–.
