Fotobook Festival Kassel "Dummy Award" Exhibition

During PHotoEspaña’s week of celebration for the photobook, IED Madrid hosts the Dummy Exhibition, a showcase of the 50 shortlisted photo books at the International Photobook Festival of Kassel.

More than 40 dummies brought from different parts of the world made their first stop at IED Madrid to be next exhibited in Athens, Cologne or Paris the upcoming months.  The winner and finalists of this edition, “Home Instruction Manual” by Jan McCullough; “White Fang” by Kumiko Motoki and “Amateure – Liebhaber der Fotografie” by Oliver Blobel, are also some of our favorites, but it’s difficult to choose only a few. Andreas Müller- Pohle and Martin Parr, teachers of the European Master of Fine Art Photography were in the Jury this year.

In words of Bonifacio Barrio Hijosa, founder of the Photobook Club in Madrid, “To have the opportunity to see all this books here in Madrid is incredible. Most of this dummies might not ever get published, its definitely the only chance you probably have to see them” He also joked about coming more than one day, we can confirm than try to understand more than 40 projects in one evening is not easy.

The Photobook Dummy Award started in 2009 with the aim to make photographers work in the book format. The dummy is the first step to produce a photobook, where the photographer faces other aspects such as paper, size or typography.

We would like to thanks everyone who came to the opening such as alumni from IED Photography and artists and photographers related with the photo book scene in Madrid. The exhibition is on view until the 19th of June.
