Back and Forth: Exhibition of the IED Photography at the International Festival of Pingyao 2015

The Pingyao International Festival of Photography is an annual event, held in the ancient Chinese city of the same name, which brings together the best photographers from all over the world, both young talents and established names. A key date in the sector calendar, and one in which the European Master of Contemporary Photography takes part, organizing one of the festival’s institutional exhibitions where the work of tutors, teachers and former students is gathered together.

In this edition, the theme chosen for the festival was Home and Dream, within which Moritz Neumüller, Director of the master, curated the exhibition Back and Forth, in which the work of 10 artists who recently graduated from the IED Madrid was grouped together.

The selection of the projects for the exhibition put together a reflection of the world in which we live “from the point of view of art based on the contemporary lens”, with similar themes: landscapes, still lifes, portraits, street life, etc.

One of the protagonists of Back and Forth was Anna Fawcus, an Australian artist and graduate of the European Master of Fine Art Photography, chosen by the IED Photography to attend the festival in China and show her final project.

The Body Never Lies is a research work carried out by Fawcus, who explores the concept of projection and extraction of emotions through photography; photography as a communication tool and its success or failure at producing and projecting emotion within the image. In this context, she carried out Mixed Emotions, a series of self-portraits that reflect on identity, understanding people as the result of the sum of their parents, as the fusion of two identities, taking her own identity and that of her parents as a starting point.
