Alfonso Almendros, teacher on the European Master in Contemporary Photography, wins the 2019 Voies Off revelation award

The photographer Alfonso Almendros has received the revelation award in the latest edition of the Voies Off Festival, one of the largest international photography events, for his project “To name a mountain”

To a large number of awards, the photographer Alfonso Almendros can now add the Révélation Saif 2019 award of the Voies Off Festival of Arlés for his project “To name a mountain”. For over 20 years, the festival has been one of the largest photography events due to its international dimension, making it the meeting place for hundreds of experts and a large audience, where photography is the leading protagonist.

“To name a mountain” is the author’s first photobook, in which he combines analogue photographic processes with manual graphic techniques, reinterpreting the pictorial work of Albert Bierstadt, the landscape artist of the Hudson River School. A work that has also conquered the Galician Photographic Festival, winning the V Galician Prize of Contemporary Photography.

The journey at the end of the 19th century to the Rocky Mountains by the artist Albert Bierstadt and the writer Fitz Hugh Ludlow is the key focus of this contemporary photography work. The photographer conducts research on the journey across the Rocky Mountings made in 1863 by Albert Bierstadt and his friend Fitz Hugh Ludlow, equating the difficulty of reaching the summit and of possessing the mountain with the love which Bierstadt secretly harboured for his travelling companion’s partner.

Alfonso Almendros combines his artistic work with teaching, and he is the teacher of the "A brief history of failure" course in the European Master in Contemporary Photography at IED Madrid. A programme in which students develop their own vision of photography in a creative environment and in partnership with renowned professionals in the photography industry.

Using a theoretical-practical methodology, Alfonso transmits to young photographers the idea of failure and error as a fundamental part of any learning process, with uncertainty being the greatest stimulus for creativity. A journey through the history of art and photography in order to discover not only the artists who were initially rejected for their ideas, but also those who embraced the concept of failure as the key driver of their creations.
