Frequently Asked Questions by students and photography lovers
Q: Why should I study photography at a design school?
A: In the world of images the frontiers between the media have been blurred. Many artistic disciplines have appropriated photography, and photography itself has been integrated into design, communication and the social media. Artists working today are characterized by the interdisciplinary use of techniques and an access to tools that are no longer accessible only to professionals. Today, images are the words of a new universal language of communication. IED Madrid has been running photography courses for many years, but it was only recently that we put the photographic medium at the core of our institution, with the creation of a Photography Department and the prestigious European Master of Fine Art Photography.
Q: Can you tell me more about the Photography Department at the IED Madrid?
A: The IED Madrid Photography Department prides itself on innovation and a quality faculty, as well as focusing on projects as the fundamental core of learning and understanding the creative experience. We believe that learning photography cannot be understood without the sincere commitment of the best professors/artists, who transmit their personal experience and share their creative encounters with other emerging and established artists. Similarly, we are convinced that this generous attitude can only be productive if students are able to translate this learning into the development and production of a personal project. IED Madrid develops its academic offerings and photography courses based on this demanding, ambitious concept, thinking not of amateurs, but rather students’ inspiration to become photographers, professionals and artists. The IED’s Department of Photography has recently signed an exchange program with Seoul’s prestigious Chung-Ang University and collaborates with institutions such as PhotoIreland (Dublin), Photographic Social Vision (Barcelona) and European Photography Magazine (Berlin).
Q: Who is behind it and who runs it?
A: The Photography Department of IED Madrid is directed by Moritz Neumüller and coordinated by Marta Orozco. Project tutors are Nicolás Combarro, Ricardo Cases and Joan Villaplana. Our students normally come from all over the world and thus most of our courses are run in English and Spanish, with simultaneous translation in the classroom, by Eduardo Cervera. Please have a look at the list of our docents.
